Question about duty cycle control Vs current control mode

Submitted by hazzahodgson on Wed, 2026-01-21 08:34

Hi everyone. I've been building my own custom firmware of vesc with a load of additional tweaks and highly modified duty control and current control to add ramping etc to suit my tsdz8 . Current control seems a bit unstable and will grind and stall motor if I'm not careful. Duty control is relentless. But am I imagining things or does duty control give worse range even if actual motor current, riding style etc are very similar?

Motor "sticks" and stops spinning

Submitted by flagoworld on Fri, 2025-12-05 19:03

Hi,

I have a 90mm outboard puck motor and an AS5048A encoder. Fresh install and setup. Seeing encoder pulses as expected.

I set duty cycle to some value and press >. Sometimes it will spin as expected, sometimes not. It will randomly "stick" in a position and hold it as if i am telling it to go to an angle instead of rotate. If I try to spin the motor by force, it springs back.

Running motors under 900ERPM in speed control

Hey guys,

this is my first post here. Up until now I always was just a quiet reader.

my question is as follows. Currently I run a big outrunner motor (watercooled and hall-sensored) with my MakerX G300 on my Dyno.
However there is the following problem that must be a software issue: whenever I run the motor over the tool under 900ERPM in speed control mode it cuts out aka the VESC goes into braking-mode and stops the motor immediately.

when set to 900ERPM the motor runs fine and when I apply a load there is no issue. Puts on full torque.

wont gonnect

VESC to spin motor after power up?

Hello VESC fam!

I'm working on a project were I have a potentiometer wired up to the VESC.  The potentiometer part works wonderfully under control type - Duty Cycle.  The part that I'm struggling a bit with is being able to power on the VESC with the potentiometer left in a position other than 0.0V...say 0.50V or 1.123V and have the motor ramp/fire up automatically.  Currently the VESC requires me to reset the potentiometer back to 0.0V and then manually ramp back up to the desired setting.

Vesc boost charging with external inductors

Submitted by Bunda on Wed, 2025-10-29 08:37

Hi,
I am wondering if someone have tried to use boost charging through VESC but instead of motor to use external inductors?
Also at his github issue https://github.com/vedderb/vesc_tool/issues/141 , Benjamin told to disconnect middle phase wire,
so current reading will reflect consumption from power source. Is this case we loose one  phase  winding, but how then boost converter is working ?
