Thanks for reporting the spam, deleted them now. I have installed the recaptcha module now, hope that helps a bit. Now there is cleantalk, the challenge question, recapcha, honeypot and email verification. It is just insane how many spammers and spambots are out there...
Using a math question as a challenge to weed out spam is not a good idea. Math is what machines are best at. You want to use a question with an answer that is obvious to your target community but not obvious to a machine. That's not an easy thing to come up with but once you find it, there will be almost zero spam.
There is not only the math question at the login, there is also a question and a recaptcha where the account is created:
There is also the paid cleantalk-module that checks every registration against a database with known spammers that they maintain.
This reduces the spam a lot, but does not completely get rid of it. Please let me know if there is anything else I can try or if you can come up with a better question.
I am no means an expert on this, but isn't it an efficient way to create an obstacle for a bot by adding intentionally mistake to the question? And maybe also to add mixed logic to the same question?
For the registry like:
"This site should work without spams, so to get rid of them please write down below what this site is about and also what <siix plus 1> is in the same line (sum 4+1 characters)."
Seriously, can we at least have a "Report" button on posts! A moderator (or two) would be better then you wouldn't have to swing by every couple of months to delete the posts that one of us has manually posted a link to. The maths questions really don't seem to be working.
Can we do a bigger step ? Switch to another System with some more features like email-notification etc... I like the xenForo Software used bei pedelecforum.de
In the challenge question during registration, you don't want the answer to be too obvious. Like "VESC". It can't be googlable either. At least not in the first 5 search results.
It needs to be somewhat a little challenging to get people thinking, requiring some context to get it right. For example, on my site I am asking: "What powers your favorite vehicle?" The answer is "electricity". That got the spam to zero. It may also be a good idea to rotate the questions/answers.
Math questions are very much useless. And that google recaptcha is better than nothing but has long been beaten by robo spammers. The one with the picture is way more effective.

A good challenge at the registration is all you need. Not google searchable one. That has worked so well for me. Almost a year spam free.
