Vesc 6 motor setup fault

Hello everyone,

I just got my Trampa mountain board and as per the setup guide i'm stuck at the motor setup wizard. The problem is when I press the calculate the RL I get a error "L is 0. Please measure it first." This is under FOC also tried BLDC with no luck. I've tried different usb cables, different voltage packs, every combo setting through the software. I've also tried using a brushless motor from a rc car with no luck. I also cant get the transmitter and receiver to work, i've tried both the quanum one that came with it and a alien power system one. Can anyone let me know what the next step in fault finding or settings are please.

Parts used:

-154kv Trampa motors

-Vesc 6 controllers with latest firmware 3.34 and software 0.87

-Quanum tx & rx

-Alien tx & rx

-12s & 6s batteries

Thanks in advance if anyone can point me in the right direction.

Davo.

I'm sadly more familiar with the old BLDC tool then the VESC tool. Might be bit too obvious, but shouldn't there be a separate button for calculating the inductance (L) before the operation that gives you the error L=0?

Side note: its preferable if you use DC-supply for the motor setup rather then the actual battery.

Linsus, no: there is (now) a single button to measure R and L. I think this has not changed from BLDC_TOOL. IIRC, there is a terminal command to measure R and one to measure L so that's the only way to measure them separately.

Yes your right there is only one button for R and L values, you cant even manually put in a ball park value to complete the wizard. Is there a help file available with the error codes and the reason that causes them?

Were you pressing the calculate button before measuring R and L? It needs those to calculate the PI gains, which is why it tells you to measure them first. Maybe the help message should be "measure R and L first".

Did it work after measuring R and L?

In the setup guide step 1 is to press the RL button, When I press that I get a R value but no L value. Have I missed a step?

Ive also tried the BLDC settings up to 10A and it says detection failed. Is there a easy way to upload a screen shot on this page so I can show you the error I get when trying the FOC method.

Has no one else got the error "L is 0. Please measure it first." when pressing the RL button during the motor configuration wizard?

I might have a faulty unit as I've followed all the correct steps as per the setup guide.

I have the exact same issue. just received the VESC a week ago struggled with usb connection now at a brick wall

in my case there is no power going to the motor hence cannot measure resistance/inductance etc. search web for help nothing

tried several times with settings, no help no sound from motor/s tried different power sources

There is only one blue light on vesc it is Sunday here in California and I am leaning towards a return but ordered from Britain ??

If any one can shed some illumination on this, we will surely appreciate

In my case the boot loader did select the wrong firmware, first time I upgraded the firmware.

Solution was to double and triple check the hardware, then download the firmware file manually and upgrade the firmware via the vesc tool again, this time selecting the file instead of the vesc tool downloading it.

(just a guess)

Thanks wdaehn my firmware has been the correct file the whole time, I downloaded the one from your link and uploaded it with no luck. I've also tried both older vesc software versions and older firmware with the same result. There is no more I can fault find as it gives me no more info. My FW is 3.34 and my HW is 410 both the latest and my vescs and motors are both brand new. Either way I've followed all the steps I can, spent hours researching and trying to fault find, made a online forum thread on the issue and it just doesn't work. There must be either a hardware or software fault which is out of my scope. I'll be contacting my retailer soon and returning the parts that don't work.

Also winst have you had any luck with connecting a receiver? I've tried two new units with no luck.

Hi Davo69URX, your FW should be 3.34 and the HW should be 60 for VESC SIX. If your HW is 410 then you uploaded the firmware for Hardware 4.10. Wrong FW can destroy your VESC!

Make sure to choose the correct Hardware.

Hi Davo69,

Finally had some success with the help from Frank and Ted; Super thanks Gents.

My problem was getting motor detection to work. Once I changed the default D value was .5 changed to zero and increased motor current from 5 amps tp 10amps then things started

I think my motor do have much higher inductance than most, I will try some other motors

I am not using the vesc on a skateboard but  rather experiment mainly with Delta vs Wye motor configuration and the vesc appear to a great tool for that

We need vesc setup for Dummies if I get some more time I will do that or perhaps someone can do a simpler minimum system settings that can really help on initial setup

so that when anyone receive their vesc they can be sure its functional in some default mode

So I have this exact issue. New trampa emtb. One side set up fine. Other side doing this. What did you guys do to solve this? I did attach the motor to the good vesc and it went through the wizard fine, so the  motor is not the issue.

Hello,
I have the same problem as my colleagues earlier.
After pressing "RL" (measure resistance and inductance), it shows error "L is 0. Please measure it first" R usually oscillates around 7000. I tried to change the values I from 1 to 30 and D from 0 to 1. Without any effects. I can not find any answer to my problem.

Firmware latest FW: 3.40 HW: 60
What I noticed though I'm not sure about it, after connecting VESC only lights up in blue, there should be at first 3 short red flashes?

My equipment
ENGINES- Turnigy aerodrive 6374 192kv,

BATTERIES 4x 3s 5000mAh 20-30c,

FUSE- specially created for 2 engines https://www.ebay.com/itm/Anti-Spark-Power-On-Off-Switch-for-VESC-or-ESC-...? nordt = true & orig_cvip = true & rt = nc & _trksid = p2047675.m43663.l44720,

VESC: https://diyelectricskateboard.com/collections/sale/products/torque-esc-b....

Nano Remote
https://diyelectricskateboard.com/products/torqueboards-2-4ghz-nano-remo...

Including an additional connector in the Anti Spark connector circuit.

Does anybody have an idea? I am sitting and looking for a second evening in Google without a result.

You have the wrong version of firmware, you need to change it to firmware for HW 412 not 60.

How can I return to previous settings?

Edit @
TechAUmNu, thanks a lot. It worked.
I found here
https://github.com/vedderb/vesc_tool/tree/master/res/firmwares

"Motor setup wizard" and "input setup wizard" successful. The motors moved, the remote worked. I'm on the right track.
In the evening I will try to solve another problem.
After reboot, disconnect usb. I turn on the board and remote and nothing. The motors are not moving. Both VESC get a signal from the remote, because in addition to the green LEDs, they turn yellow at this moment.
I have probably given wrong values for engines or batteries somewhere.
