Vesc 100/250 for unsensored brushless motors

Hi All,I have just subscribed to your forum

I am a French man living in France an building gyroplane as a hobby

in gyro we need to pre rotate huge rotors before taking of .. after this the rotor spins by itself (so there is not danger to do it because the system does not helps to fly but only to take off)

I have built a series 8000 w  brushless sensorless  pre-rotators that all burnt (controller and motor) because my acceleration acceleration is not limited by the current in the mower circuit ...

I have just discovered Vesc project and i am planning to purchase a Vesc 100/250 and I have a couple of questions:

- the first is : is my money will go to the original opened source conceptors, I would not like to give a penny to any company having used your work to make omney over the opened source efforts you all

- second question , is this controller able to run with my un-sensored brushless ? (I will switch to a sensor motor but on the first place I would like to try with what I have woutou having to re-machine a couple of parts that I have already machined)

- third question is how does it practically works ? I mean I will accelerate with a throttle and then when the current will exceed my max figure what will happen ? will the controle stop accelerating and then resume when the current is under the programmed max level ?

- last question is it possible to automatize acceleration with an external microcontroller in order to get rid of the throttle ?

sorry for all those stupid rooky questions ... I am just a user and I an conscious that I will not bring any help to this opened source community ..

regards

Hi jmurba,

Unfortunately in this forum there are lot of questions but there is not always answers.

I beleive you don't really need sensored motor at all, because that is only necessary when you need the highest torque from standstill. VESC is quite good at giving full current even at slow rpm-s, without sensor. In fact, when you use a sensored motor, the controller still changes to sensorless mode after a certain rpm.

There are more methods you can control your motor. To avoid overheating, it is the best to use "current mode", where the output current is proportional to the throttle input. You are building a flying vehicle, so I would not encourage you to try out automatic throttle things, because probably there are ways to achieve that, but it is not safe if you are not an expert in programming these.

If you beleive that it is safe to use a hobby grade propulsion (among them VESC is probably the best), for your gyro pre rotation, then probably it is fine. Go with it. You can easily change the limits on the motor, can have lot of type of inputs, and also with FOC it will be able to get some more % of efficiency which also help to avoid overheating. Also to be on the safe side you can add temperature sensor to your motor, and then set a limit in VESC to ease of with current after a certain temperature. This way it will be reliable. My ebike motor is limited by vesc sometimes as it gets overheated, but due to this behavior nothing damages, and I can go full power after it had cooled down a bit.

Also I do not know what type of motor you use and what rpm you run it, but your problem could also come from theat your motor is not geared down enough.
