Is the Vesc 5 mkIII capable of 13s li-Ion (fully charged 54,6V)

hello fellow enthusiasts, I would love a awnser to this simple question

is the Vesc 6 MKIII  capable of being powered by a 13s li-Ion battery with a maximum voltage of 54,6V (13*4,2V) ?

I am going to build a electric outboard with it, the extra rpm and power would be usefull and it would help me not needing to buy the vesc 75/300 and maximally using the vesc 6 mkIII

best regards, Pelle

my English might not be the best, it is not my first language, sorry for that.

The problem is that I can't find a good BMS that works on 12s, because 13s is a widely used size nom 46,8V. I can't seem to find a trustworthy 12s BMS that is the main reason I would like to use it with a 13s BMS.

Thanks, Pelle

Hi Pelle,

The majority of the energy of the batteries aren't in the top voltage span. So the gains from 12S to 13S are marginal at best. Further more the top gain at full voltage wont last very long during discharge.

No its not recommeded to use 13S with the MKII. Some cases exist where 13S seem to work. But its scetchy at best. Problem is the voltage transients produced are very close to the limit of the DRV.

Even if its rated for 60V(abs max) the headroom is considerably less from a 12S setup to a 13S setup.

To answer your BMS question. There are plenty of 12S BMS out there. check bestech or batterysupports f.e.

Hi linsus,

thanks a lot for the BMS recommendations,

the main reasons I wanted a 13s pack is because I did not know of any good BMS manufacturers who sell 12s a BMS.

Thanks, Pelle

Hi Pelle,

If you use a battery pack with multiple parallel groups (2p, 3p...) then it's ok to go 13s.

We have multiple balance board users with 13s, and what you want to avoid is voltage spikes. When using various p groups, the spikes get lower and lower, as more cells can take the regen current and end up clamping the voltage.

If, however, you would like to go only 13s1p, then it's not recommended to go 13s.
