Noob: clever/stupid mild hybrid idea

Hi all, i am toying with a potentially silly idea. I have an old fiat 850 with a 47 hp 850cc engine.

My idea, basically, is to add a nice 15 or so kw bldc motor  on a toothed belt connected somewhere in the transmission, probably directly to the camshaft, attached to the alternator drive pulley shaft, or off the flywheel where the starter sits.

I imagine having the motor throttle ramping up from zero, in the last say 10 percent of the engine throttle travel, so under hard acceleration, i get a nice boost.

At all other times id get a mild regen to recharge the small battery pack.

Anyone see any showstopping issues? Vesc seems best for my project as its nicely customiseable.

My concern is not really understanding the behaviour of bldc motors under load.

Does increasing the throttle set a specific target rpm or does it increase the power supplied to the motor?  Does that question even make sense?

Any constructive opinions/suggestions most appreciated  (apart from simple "dont bother, it wont work" 😊 - im a bit stubborn)

Did you progress with this?

I had the same idea but for a motorbike engine, where the generator is 3-phase and attached directly to the end of the crankshaft. Couldn't be easier ... just change the reg/rectifier for a VESC.

Of course, I never got round to actually doing it, but I think its a great idea to give a boost, or even be used to flatten out any dips in the torque curve of the engine.

Just go fully electric. You will thank yourself you did. Don't cling on the past.
