Vesc Labs Minim Getting Started

Hello all - my first post, and I'm hoping for some direction (thank you in advance!).

I have just received my first VESC board, the Minim that I bought directly from Vesc Labs. Here is my question: is it necessary to compile and flash the firmware for this board? I am guessing it does not come with firmware installed?

I am wondering if this is the case, as I am unable to connect to the board with VESC Tool. Also I can not see it with "lsusb" or "dmesg". I am on Ubuntu 26 LTS, and have added $USER to the 'dialout' group, so I think I should be able to see it. I have powered the board with 48V from my ebike battery, and I am using the USB cable that came with the ESC, as well as testing another cable I use regularly for data.

If my assumption is correct, I can try to follow the posted tutorials for compiling and flashing the firmware - but it would be nice to know if this is expected with the boards from Vesc Labs (or should I be seeing it the Minim appear in my devices)

Thank you very much for any pointers.

It will have the firmware pre installed out of the box.you dont need to compile firmware for it, thats not the issue. is the blue led on after hooking up your battery?do you have a bluetooth module? if so try to connect to mobile device or a windows computer via usb.
