Issues with throttle range translating to duty

So I recently purchased a fsesc flipsky 6.7 single esc version. I hooked it up to a hall effect sensor type pedal, a 6374 170kv brushless motor, and a 36v 12.8ah lithium ion battery. I downloaded the free version of the vesc tool on windows, set up the motor, and entered in the battery info. When that was finished, I hooked up the pedal, power to 3v pin, gnd to gnd pin, and signal pin to adc1. I used the setup wizard, and in the setup wizard, the values when I pressed the pedal looked perfectly normal, it would be at 0 when not pressed and climb up to 100 when I pressed it down all the way. I clicked apply, set the control type to current control, and tested it. When I pressed the pedal down about 15%, the duty bar on the bottom right hand would jump to 100%, and the motor would do the same. I tried switching to duty cycle, and it worked and I got the correct throttle range, but the motor stopped and started too abruptly, and the motor was making weird sounds because of the suddenly applied torque (Im guessing). Because of that issue, I now have to barely push down on the pedal and accelerate slowly. I want to be able to use current control, but I cannot due to my problem. I’m not sure as to if this is a problem with the esc, or the software, but any insight as to how to resolve my issue would be great.
