Hi,
I connect an ABI encoder from the output shaft of a motor with a gearbox that has a 100:1 gear ratio. The BLDC motor is about 500g so I chose medium size in-runner in the motor FOC. When running setup motor FOC, the motor detection result shows it is sensorless. My guess is that when it tries to sense the encoder, the output shaft is barely moving due to the large gear ratio and the VESC cannot detect if there's an encoder. Could that be the reason why it is unable to sense the encoder? If so how can I fix it?

I believe you need to move the sensor to the motor side NOT the gear box output shaft. Add the gear ratio in the configuration of the VESC.
