FSESC6.6+ Over Voltage Fault 80mm Motors

Hey all, I'm trying to drive 8072 160 KV Leopard Hobby motors with a Flipsky FSESC6.6 Plus and consistently encountering FAULT_CODE_OVER_VOLTAGE errors (~60 volts recorded at the time of the fault on a 12s setup) when applying heavy throttle. This occurs in both FOC and BLDC mode with 100 amp motor limits. I'm concerned the ESC's relatively small capacitors might not be able to handle violent transients from these large motors. Does anyone here have experience with this problem or advice on further troubleshooting steps? Thanks guys.

I have same problem with 6380 motors and 80A motor current limit.

I am also wondering if mosfet clamp capacitors aren't enough for such high currents.

Have you solved this problem ?

Have you tried adding more capacitors? Or using a higher voltage rated ESC? Or using a lower voltage?

There's not really a magic bullet to this problem. A number of factors can cause the voltage spikes that are a normal part of a BLDC motor rapidly changing torques to exceed the built in maximum voltage of the VESC.

You could:

  • reduce the voltage of the battery
  • shorten the wires between the battery and ESC (it's okay to lengthen the motor wires)
  • add extra capacitance to the battery wires
  • reduce the max current limits
  • reduce the torque the motor sees
  • use a larger ESC
  • use a smaller motor

Alternatively you could upload the no limits firmware into your ESC and then the next time there is a large voltage spike you will not get a warning but the ESC may explode.
