FIXED: VESC Express Wifi or Bluetooth connection to VESC Tool: not showing up?

Hey,

I'm having trouble connecting VESC tool (PC) to my VESC Express by wifi or bluetooth. All the firmware is up to date and I'm using the latest VESC tool. I can see the VESC Express connected to my home wifi network, and available in bluetooth, but neither are detected by VESC tool even when I try the various scan options. Is there anything else I need to do to get it to connect?

I've successfully worked through quite a few other challenges on my VESC journey but this one has me stumped!

Thanks, Steve

Working on a 12s powered quad motor R/C car. Single powertrain successfully dyno tested up to 150,000 erpm (21,400 rpm).

There are some 10s dyno tests shown in this video

You have to connect the Express wifi to your computers wifi using the standart password vesc6wifi. Then it pops up in vesctool. Connecting your PC via Bluetooth can be a bit tricky using Windows, mostly it works. You can try flashing firmware again.

Thanks for the reply electricfox. Unfortunately even after connecting to the wifi network as you suggested it still didnt work. I already updated the firmware. Luckily the usb connection isnt too much of a pain!

Is your Express getting 5V? If its lower than 5V it can cause problems. Some cheap VESCs dont provide stable 5V output. You can also try disabling bluetooth and then try with wifi again.

Hi electricfox, I checked and its giving 5.07V from the ESC (you are right in that I am using cheap Makerbase VESC's and Express).

I was typing a reply further detailing the issue since it was still persisting with the Express not showing up in VESC tool, even though I could see the Express connecting to my home network when in station mode and connect to it via wifi in access point mode. I thought, is it some setting on my laptop? So I then looked into security settings and found that access through the firewall for vesc tool was not enabled. Once that was enabled I have been able to successfully connect using both wifi methods (but not Bluetooth so far!). So I'm calling that a success! Sorry to fall foul of a fairly dumb issue. Anyway I look forward to sharing my R/C project to the group in more detail sometime soon. Another VESC challenge conquered!

Thanks again for the helpful suggestions

Nice to hear! Can you describe in detail where you set which setting in Windows? This would help others for sure!

You are welcome!

Here's the instructions of how to get to the firewall settings:

In Windows 11, use the Privacy page to choose which apps can use a particular feature. Select Start > Settings > Privacy & security > Firewall and network protection. Then select "Allow an app through firewall"

Enable "change settings" by clicking the button above the list, which wasn't particularly obvious!

Find "Vesc_tool_XXX.exe" and enable communication over private networks.

I hope that helps! Steve
