I tried wiring it up based on a momentary switch with the terminals conected to the pins. but it doesnt seem to start on rolling the motor.

I'm having the same issue. Is the "roll to start" function supposed to detect the IMU acceleration? In this case the IMU should be calibrated in a certain way?
The MKV version switches on by default if you turn the motor fast enough. It needs to generate some voltage to activate the switching.
Thanks @frank, but I'm using the vesc on my ebike, where the motor is not engaged when i push the bike... That is why i'd like to use the IMU for start. Is there a possibility for that?
